Connect Claude

Claude can connect to your site in three ways. Pick the one that matches how you use Claude. Every method uses the same Server URL from Urmi → AI & MCP, and Urmi shows the exact steps, filled in with your site's address.

To see the steps for your site, go to Urmi → AI & MCP → Connect a client and click Claude. The three methods are the tabs at the top of the panel.

The MCP server is off until an administrator turns it on. Do that first: see Turn on the MCP server.

Claude app (connector)

This is the easiest way. Once added, the connector is available in Claude on every device.

Before you start: your site must be public and use HTTPS. Claude connects from its own servers, so it cannot reach a site that only runs on your computer. For a local site, use Claude Code or Claude Desktop with an API key instead.

1. Copy the Server URL

   In Urmi → AI & MCP, click Copy next to Server URL. It looks like https://example.com/wp-json/urmi/v1/mcp.

2. Add a custom connector in Claude

   In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and click Add custom connector. Give it your site's name and paste the URL.

3. Connect and approve

   Click Connect. A sign-in window from your site opens. Log in with your WordPress account if you are not logged in yet, check the permissions and click Approve.

4. Turn the connector on in a chat

   In a chat, open the Search and tools menu and make sure your site's connector is enabled.

5. Try it

   Ask something like: "Read the Urmi build guide, then design a home page for my site."

When Claude signs in, your site shows who is asking and what the app will be able to do, with one line per permission.

• Read is always included.
• Content and Design are checked by default. Uncheck what you do not want Claude to change.
• Site (Edit menus, clear caches and read form submissions) is unchecked by default. Check it only if you want Claude to do those things.
• Permissions your WordPress account does not have are greyed out.

After you click Approve, Claude appears under AI & MCP → Connected apps, where you can disconnect it at any time. Access renews automatically while you use Claude. If you do not use it for 30 days, you sign in again. See API keys & scopes for what each permission allows.

Claude Code

Claude Code connects to your site directly. You add the server once from your terminal.

1. Create an API key

   On the Claude Code tab, click Create key. Choose the permissions and click Create key. The new key is filled into the command on the page. See API keys & scopes.

2. Add the server

   Copy the command and run it in your project folder:

   Add --scope user to use the server in every project, not only the current one.

3. Check the connection

   Start Claude Code and run /mcp. Your site's server should show as connected.

Claude Desktop (config file)

Use this method when you run Claude Desktop and your site is not reachable for connectors, for example a site on your own computer. Claude Desktop starts a small local bridge called mcp-remote that forwards requests to your site. The bridge needs Node.js (opens in a new tab) on your computer.

1. Create an API key

   On the Claude Desktop (config file) tab, click Create key, choose the permissions and create it. The key is filled into the snippet on the page.

2. Open the config file

   In Claude Desktop, open Settings → Developer → Edit Config. This opens claude_desktop_config.json.

3. Add your site

   Paste the snippet from Urmi. If the file already has servers, add the new entry inside the existing "mcpServers" block.

   The key is passed through the URMI_AUTH variable because some systems split arguments that contain spaces.

4. Restart Claude Desktop

   Quit Claude Desktop completely and open it again. Your site's tools appear in the Search and tools menu.

Check that it works

• In Urmi, open AI & MCP → Activity. Each request from Claude shows up with the tool it used and whether it worked.
• The Calls · 24h counter at the top of the screen goes up.
